Meet the Potter

I’m Sarah Crawford, Owner, and Professional Studio Potter at Rockwood Studios in Bennington, Vermont. My passion for working with clay and making pottery started early on when I had the opportunity to take a ceramics class in high school. I loved the process and the excitement I felt throwing, glazing, and firing a piece of clay to create a unique piece of functional art. It felt rewarding and to me, a deliberate attempt at slowing down and connecting to something deeper to honor a practically lost traditional art form. I dreamed of one day opening my own studio.

After college, I worked as a professional photographer and business manager. I enjoyed the work but my desire to be a full-time potter persisted and intensified and I knew eventually, when the time was right, it would become part of my story.

In the late summer of 2020, after dreaming for two decades of having my own studio, my dream became a reality.  With the help of my husband, we converted ½ of our two-car garage into a working studio space with a new L&L kiln that I have named the Silver Fox, a new Pacifica Pottery Wheel, clay, tools, and glazes that are all purchased locally in Sheffield, MA.

It was my intention to operate this small business on nights and weekends.  Then in early 2021 during the pandemic and after life turned in unexpected ways, I made the decision to make a career out of making beautiful functional pieces of art!  It was then, Rockwood Studios was established and became my full-time journey.

Hand-made Pottery

I make a variety of handmade items including but not limited to, handmade mugs, bowls, sponge holders, berry bowls, utensil holders, dinnerware, soap dishes, and chip & dip sets. I work primarily with mid-fire dark and light stoneware as the durability allows for everyday use. Each piece is food-safe, lead-free, microwave, and dishwasher-safe. Some pieces are handmade while the majority of my pieces are thrown on the wheel.

Since opening Rockwood Studios, I’ve taken some time to reflect on my journey to this point. I truly believe things happen for a reason and I am thankful for all the trials and tribulations (although hard and painful at times) that have brought me to this particular path and have set me forth on a new journey! I encourage you too, to follow your dreams.  Each step is moving you in the direction of where you are meant to be.

Finding this life as a potter has been a gift.
